Best Times
Spring (April to June) is one of the best times to catch ide, as they become more active and feed aggressively after winter. They are often found in shallower waters in search of food.
During autumn (September to November), ide are preparing for the colder months and can be found feeding heavily.
Common Baits
Worms: Redworms and earthworms are popular choices for ide, as they are an excellent natural bait and can be used in different ways, such as on the hook or as part of a groundbait mix.
Sweetcorn: Sweetcorn is a very effective bait for ide, especially when used on the hook. The bright yellow colour attracts ide, and the soft texture makes it easy for the fish to bite.
Pellets: Fishmeal pellets or boilie pellets are great for ide, as they resemble the fish’s natural food sources.
Maggots: Ide will readily feed on maggots, especially during the warmer months when they are more active.
Fishing Techniques
Float Fishing: Float fishing is one of the most popular methods for catching ide, especially when they are feeding in the upper layers of the water and in the shallows.
Ledgering: Ledgering involves fishing a baited hook on the bottom using a weight to anchor the line. It is best for deeper waters and larger, more cautious ide.
Feeder Fishing: This technique uses a feeder to release bait into the water and attract ide to the hook. It is most effective for drawing ide into a specific area.
Tackle and Equipment
Rod and Reels: A light to medium float rod or feeder rod is ideal for catching ide as they offer sensitivity and flexibility for bite detection, while still providing the necessary power to handle larger ide.
Floats: Choose a medium-sized waggler or a small stick float. The float should be sensitive enough to indicate subtle bites from ide but strong enough to withstand the water conditions.
Feeder Gear: Use a method feeder or cage feeder when feeder fishing for ide. Method feeders are often used with groundbait, while cage feeders are good for lighter baits like pellets or corn.
Night Fishing
Ide are primarily active during the day, but they can still be caught at night, especially during warmer months when they continue to feed into the evening. During spring and summer, when the water temperatures are warmer, ide are more likely to remain active in the cooler hours of the night, making night fishing more successful.
