Golden rudd fishing is most productive during the warmer months of summer and autumn. In summer, they often feed near the surface, making them more accessible to anglers. In autumn, they remain active but begin to move into slightly deeper waters.
During the colder months, golden rudd become less active and they retreat to deeper waters, making them more difficult to catch.
Common Baits
Maggots: One of the most effective and widely used baits for golden rudd. White, red or even fluorescent colours are particularly attractive to the golden rudd.
Bread: Bread is highly effective, especially for surface feeding rudd. Use it on a light float rig for best results.
Sweetcorn: Bright yellow sweetcorn kernels are visually appealing and readily taken by golden rudd. Use a single kernel on a hook or mix it into groundbait.
Casters: The pupal stage of maggots is excellent for catching larger rudd. Combine with groundbait for added attraction.
Fishing Techniques
Float fishing: This is the most popular and versatile method for catching rudd. Cast near vegetation or areas where rudd are seen rising. Keep the bait just below the surface or mid-water, as rudd are often feeding in these zones.
Surface fishing: Targeting rudd at the surface is highly effective, particularly on warm, calm days.
Ledgering: While not as common, ledgering can be effective for catching larger rudd in deeper water. Worms, casters, or sweetcorn are ideal for this method.
Tackle and Equipment
Rods: A light to medium-light float rod, 10-12 feet in length, is perfect for casting small floats and handling rudd. Look for a rod with a soft tip action to detect bites and prevent hook pulls.
Reels: Choose a small, lightweight spool reel (1000-2500 size). Match it with a smooth drag system for controlling larger rudd.
Floats: Lightweight wagglers are excellent for presenting bait at various depths.
Night Fishing
Night fishing for golden rudd can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, although I is less common that daytime fishing. Rudd tend to be more active during daylight and twilight hours. This is when they may still be feeding near the surface or at mid-depth.
