Best Times
F1 fishing is most productive in the summer (June to August) when there is peak feeding activity due to warmer water temperatures. F1s feed confidently in both the margins and open water, particularly during the early morning and evening, avoiding midday heat.
Activity level is also high during early autumn, before tapering off as the water cools. The best times are late morning to early afternoon when the sun warms the water. F1s feed heavily to prepare for winter, often focusing on the bottom or mid-water.
Common Baits
Pellets: Micro or 2mm pellets make great feed options, especially when used with a method or pellet feeder.
Maggots: Maggots, single or double, is a traditional bait that works year-round, especially in colder months when F1s can be shy biters. Use maggots with a pole or light feeder setup.
Sweetcorn: Bright, visible, and sweet-flavoured, a single grain of sweetcorn can be highly effective. It’s particularly good when fishing near margins.
Worms: Chopped worms or a small section of worm can attract F1s, especially if they’re feeding actively.
Fishing Techniques
Pole fishing: Pole fishing is the most popular and effective method for catching F1s due to its precision. Shallow pole fishing is ideal when F1s are feeding mid-water or in the upper layers, especially in warmer months. However, margin fishing is better when the F1s are patrolling the margins, particularly in the evenings or early mornings.
Feeder Fishing: Feeder fishing is excellent for targeting F1s at range or in open water. Use a small, flatbed method feeder loaded with micros or groundbait and then cast to a feature or the same spot consistently and wait for bites.
Waggler Fishing: Waggler fishing is a versatile method for targeting F1s at different depths.
Tackle and Equipment
Rods: Use a standard pole of 11m to 16m to allow precise bait placement and control. Feeder rods (9ft to 11ft) are ideal for method fishing, as it handles the F1’s quick bites and hard runs.
Floats: Pellet wagglers are useful for shallow fishing and loaded wagglers are good for longer casts.
