BEST TIMES
Spring and Summer are the prime types for carp fishing as the warmer weather temperatures increase their activity and feeding patterns.
Autumn can be particularly productive as carp feed heavily to build up reserves before winter.
In winter, carp become less active due to colder water temperatures. but dedicated anglers can still catch them by fishing in deeper, warmer parts of lakes or rivers.
Common Baits
Boilies: One of the most popular and effective carp baits. Available in various sizes colours, and flavours, they are designed to be durable and long-lasting in water.
Sweetcorn: An inexpensive and highly effective bait. Its bright yellow colour makes it easy for carp to spot.
Pellets: Specialised carp pellets that slowly break down in water are a favourite for both anglers and carp.
Bread: A classic bait that works well, particularly when targeting carp near the surface.
Fishing Techniques
Float Fishing: A traditional and simple method were a float is used to detect bites. This works best in shallower waters or around weed beds.
Ledgering: A bottom fishing technique where the bait is placed on the lakebed using a weight (ledger). This is a popular method for targeting carp that feed near the bottom.
Hair Rig: A highly effective carp rig where the bait is attached on a “hair” just below the hook, allowing the hook to remain exposed for a better hook-up.
Tackle & Equipment
Rods and Reels: Carp rods are generally long (9-12 feet) with a strong test to curve handle the weight and power of large carp. Reels are often equipped with bait runners or free-spool mechanisms
Bite Alarms: Carp anglers often bite alarms to alert them when a fish is on the line, particularly useful when ledgering.
Landing Nets: A large, oft landing is essential for safely handling carp without causing injury to the fish.
Night Fishing
Carp are often more active during the night, and many anglers prefer night fishing for better chances of success. Anglers should be well-prepared with the right lighting, warm clothing, and bite alarms for night sessions.
