Best Times
Blue orfe are more active during the warmer months of spring and summer, making these the ideal seasons for fishing.
The early mornings and late evenings are often more productive as orfe tend to feed during low-light conditions.
Common Baits
Maggots: Maggots are one of the most effective baits for blue orfe. Use single or double maggot setups on light tackle.
Worms: Small redworms or chopped worms work well, particularly for larger orfe.
Bread: A classic bait for surface feeders. Use small, floating pieces or roll bread into tight dough balls.
Sweetcorn: Brightly coloured and highly visible sweetcorn can tempt orfe when fished mid-water or on the bottom.
Fishing Techniques
Float fishing: Float fishing is on of the most versatile and widely used techniques. It involves using a float to suspend bait at a specific depth, making it suitable for catching fish that feed in mid-water or near the bottom.
Surface fishing: Surface fishing targets fish that feed near or on the water’s surface. This method is particularly effective for species that are naturally surface feeders or during warm weather when blue orfe are more likely to rise.
Ledgering: Ledgering (also called bottom fishing) is used to target fish that feed on or near the bottom. A weight or feeder is used to keep the bait anchored to the lakebed.
Tackle and Equipment
Rods: A light to medium feeder rod or a float rod (9-12 feet) is ideal. Sensitivity is important as blue orfe have a delicate bite.
Reels: A small to medium-sized fixed spool reel with a smooth drag system. Pair with 4-6lb test line to handle their gentle bites and spirited fight.
Floats and Rigs: A sensitive float setup like a stick float or waggler is excellent. Alternatively, use a ledger or feeder rig with a light weight to present bait near the bottom or mid-water.
Night Fishing
Night fishing for blue orfe can be exciting challenge, as these fish are known to be more active during low light conditions. Anglers should be well-prepared with warm clothing, the right lighting and bite indicators.
