Best Times
From April to June, grass carp become more active as the water warms up. Late spring is a great time as they start feeding more aggressively after the winter.
The warm summer months (July to August) are prime time for grass carp fishing. They are most active during this period and feed heavily in the mornings and evenings when the water is cooler.
Common Baits
Sweetcorn: A universal favourite, sweetcorn is visually attractive due to its bright colour and is highly palatable to grass carp.
Bread: Bread is a versatile bait that works well both on the surface and submerged. Use crusty bread for surface fishing and soft bread balls for bottom fishing.
Lettuce: Grass carp love leafy greens like lettuce. Attach a leaf securely to the hook for surface fishing.
Strawberries: Their strong aroma and natural sugars make strawberries an excellent bait.
Fishing Techniques
Surface fishing: Grass carp often feed near the surface, especially on calm, sunny days thus making surface fishing a highly effective technique. Using baits like bread, cast them near areas where the grass carp are basking or feeding.
Ledgering: When grass cap are feeding deeper, bottom fishing is a reliable approach. Use small weights or leads to avoid spooking the fish and allow the bait to move more naturally.
Pre-Baiting: Grass carp can be encouraged to feed in a specific area by pre-baiting. Identify areas with natural vegetation or where grass carp are likely to congregate. Introduce small amounts of bait consistently over a few days to build confidence in the fish.
Tackle and Equipment
Rods: Grass carp are strong fish, so a carp rod is needed to balance sensitivity with power. A test curve of 2.75-3.5 lb is ideal. It provides enough backbone for powerful fights while maintaining sensitivity for delicate bites.
Reels: Use a mid-size to large carp reel with a smooth drag system to handle long, fast runs.
Float rigs: Use adjustable float setups for fishing near the surface or mid-water.
Night Fishing
Night fishing for grass carp can be a rewarding experience as these fish often feed actively during the cooler, quieter hours. Pre-baiting an area can be a useful step in preparing for night fishing. Introducing bait in a chosen area during the day or evening can draw grass carp into the location before nightfall.
