Best Times
The best period to catch ghost carp is in spring (from March to May) when water temperatures begin to rise. Ghost carp becomes more active after winter dormancy, feeding near the surface during warm, sunny days.
Early to mid-autumn is also a good time to catch ghost carp as they are feeding heavily to prepare for winter, particularly in sheltered areas with natural food sources like fallen leaves and aquatic insects.
Common Baits
Worms: Lobworms and redworms are a natural food source and are irresistible to ghost carp.
Sweetcorn: Sweetcorn is bright, visible and sweet flavoured, making it a top choice for ghost carp. It can be used alone or combined with other baits like boilies or pellets.
Boilies: Fruit-flavoured boilies like strawberry or pineapple are especially effective but fishmeal-based boilies are another excellent option.
Pellets: High oil pellets, like halibut or trout pellets, are ideal for attracting ghost carp, especially in the summer.
Fishing Techniques
Float fishing: A traditional and simple method where a float is used to detect bites. Float fishing is ideal for catching ghost carp in shallow waters.
Ledgering: Ledgering is a technique in which a baited hook is presented on or near the bottom of a body of water. It involves the use of a weight or sinker to anchor the bait at the desired depth. Ledgering is effective for ghost carp feeding on the lakebed.
Surface fishing: Surface fishing is a technique used to catch fish that feed on or just below the water’s surface. This approach is particularly effective during warmer months when the ghost carp are more likely to feed near the surface.
Tackle and Equipment
Rods and Reels: Use a 10-12 ft carp rod with a test curve of 2.75-3.5 lb for casting accuracy and handling powerful runs. However, a shorter rod (9-10 ft) may be more suitable for smaller lakes. A baitrunner reel allows the carp to take the bait freely before an angler engages the drag, reducing the risk of line breakage.
Method Feeders: A method feeder loaded with groundbait is highly effective for ghost carp.
Bite Alarms: Bite alarms are essential for ledgering and night fishing, providing audible alerts for takes.
Night Fishing
Ghost carp often feed more confidently at night when the surroundings are quieter and human activity is reduced. They patrol margins and shallower areas under the cover of darkness.
Anglers should be well-prepared with warm clothing, the right lighting and bite indicators.
